I honestly think that Obama has more to worry about in criticism that will come from the Left. Sour grapes from the Right will be easily deflected. "His fault" won't be the focus, but rather the systematic defects in the global system established since WWII will be the topic, and to quote Lenin, "What is to be done?" will be the direction of discussion. A lot of people voted for Obama because they actually do expect fundamental change.
Conservatism on the ground will just tough it out; it was always mostly about national security, social traditionalism and a recognition of human nature as a fact of life, maintaining society, and the concept of duty. Conservatives as a group do believe in the free market, more or less, but they're quite prepared to subordinate the free market to high priorities when need be. It is the naive libertarian faith of its intellectual class, which will be in eclipse.
Read the essay by John Peterson of the Socialist Appeal, posted below. There is a volcano simmering there. Personages like Cindy Sheehan and Cynthia McKinney may represent forces that Obama will not be able to subdue with his smooth talk. Maybe Peterson is right; maybe there IS a Labor Party emerging.
