When Pluto was declared a non-major planet in 2006, more people
got upset about that and more CA politicians jumped into action for
reinstating Pluto as a major planet than many other much closer
issues at the time.

Of course it's always easier to support something that is just a big
ball of ice 3 billion miles from Earth.
And for whatever this is worth, I just found out there is an extinct
volcano named Mount Pluto near Lake Tahoe in CA:
