why should we expect future historians to have access to a CD player on Mars?
I wouldn’t worry about that. Any future generation that has the technology getting people to Mars should be able to analyze the data on the disk. Maybe they will be able to scan the digital data into their computers and analyze it that way.
We don’t write in stone anymore with hieroglyphics, yet archeologist can decipher ancient writings.
