In "Letters fro Iwo Jima" (the corollary to "Flags of our Fathers" - both highly recommended if you haven't seen them), the Japanese soldiers were referred to as (a term I can't recall and can't find on Google - but the value of the stamp on their draft notice), so it seems the war planners everywhere place a low value on those under their command.
