Washington Post column. "The Decency of George W. Bush"

I did not make this up.

By Michael Gerson Friday, November 7, 2008; Page A23

"Election Day 2008 must have been filled with rueful paradoxes for the sitting president. Iraq -- the issue that dominated George W. Bush's presidency for 5 1/2 bitter, controversial years -- is on the verge of a miraculous peace. And yet this accomplishment did little to revive Bush's political standing -- or to prevent his party from relegating him to a silent role.

"The achievement is historic. In 2006, Iraq had descended into a sectarian killing spree that seemed likely to stop only when the supply of victims was exhausted. Showing Truman-like stubbornness, Bush pushed to escalate a war that most Americans -- and some at the Pentagon -- had already mentally abandoned."

By the way, "Battle for Iraq's 3rd city hangs in the balance. Since invasion, pendulum has swung between violence and fragile security."

While Gerson is wetting his pants at the thought of Bush's victory, there is still a Green Zone, Americans cannot walk down the streets except in groups armed to the teeth and wearing body armor. There are over 100,000 US mercenaries wandering around shooting up anything they choose to without the Iraqis having any recourse, the hospitals don't have doctors and over 2,000,000 of the brightest and most talented Iraqis are gone. Got the hell out of there.

Oh, yes. The Iraqis want the US the hell out of there, too, completely out of there.

For once I'll have to agree with my Conservative friends - the Washington Post buttmonkey absolutely blew this one. Unless, of course, this is another example of the Bush Administration using public funds to bribe reporters to publish stories favorable to Bush and Cheney.
