I sat through weeks of listening to Obama supporters tell me that past associations are completely irrelevant to selecting our Commander in Chief, and that bringing them up was an "attack" on Obama.
Under those circumstances, yes, it's ironic, even though it is probably standard operating procedure for these positions.
