Thanks!

This has been done before, a big Pacific islands catmaran was sailed from New Zealand to Hawaii to recreate the discovery of Hawaii and to rediscover their own heritage, with one of the last of the old wayfarers in command. The crew included anthropologists and islanders.

I recommend "Interstellar Migration and the Human Experience", (Finney and Jones, Editors), which documents this voyage, and also has a very interesting essay speculating on possible patterns of colonization of the galaxy using the Pacific island experience as a model.

I also recommend "The Last Navigator", Stephen D Thomas, about a young American yachtsman who apprentices himself to Mau Piailug, a Caroline Islands wayfarer, to learn the traditional ways.

These books got me interested in this subject, and I've been fascinated by it ever since. These stone age peoples already had highly advanced naval architecture and navigation techniques while the Norsemen were still hugging the coastline.

Incidentally, for you Thor Heyerdahl fans, the migrations went from SE Asia into the Pacific, not from South America to the west. The Pacific Islanders had much better ships and more advanced skills than the South Americans, and anthropology and archaeology have confirmed it. But don't let that stop you from reading "Kon-Tiki" if you never have before. It's still one of the great sea stories of all time.
