re: The vanishing sky (a cry against light pollution)

Thanks, Raoul!

When I saw what you were doing I decided to try myself, and here is the result:

"Remembering the abundance of the night...

The bestarred celestial vault has disappeared from our view, drowned under megawatts of artificial light. Despite a deluge of digital images which inundates our screens, the sky escapes us, progressively erased from our environment and our imagination. The gods have ceded the sky, leaving an emptiness [as between the stars], without anything of substance that only, perhaps, is studied by artists and scientists. Their regard linked to the questions and paradoxes which confer on the cosmos its fascinating character. In a Western, over-informed culture, where any image is over-circulated, and technology corrupts what is real, for good or ill effect [in the context of an advanced/technological society], it is the artists who remain the ones who allow us to doubt. A redeeming doubt. The question of what is real remains pertinent, the realities of modernism take new life, and, between daydreams and scientific images, real or imagined objects, the artist continues to amuse himself with the measure of the distance between what one sees, and what one believes. Between the dictates of ideology and the revelations of our thoughts. (...) Space, like a formidable dream machine, re-enchants and unsettles, each in turn. Each taking hold, more or less violently, of our doubts and uncertainties on the question of the sky."

That was actually a bit of work, and some of the stuff, like 'escient', sure doesn't translate easily. I'd like to think I captured a bit of the poetry, but it wasn't easy.

As far as the 'dream machine' goes, I think the context is more that of a machine so complex that you can only dream of understanding it. Kind of like the cosmos. Again, capturing the context imputed meaning of a few simple words in a foreign language is tough. It is a fun exercise.

I do so love Paris. Thanks for sharing!
