Once you know "why", "how" doesn't really matter.
My guess is your name, phone, address and email (and perhaps other facts about you) appear in different combinations on different databases. Software is beating on these databases all the time, trying to find matches so they can capture your identity and put it on a list having all that information about you. Once they can link all those facts to one person, and connect it to their consumer preferences, they have a powerful, and directed, marketing tool.
What a colossal waste of brilliant engineering and expertise. This is the technology that could have taken us to the stars. To use it like this seems obscene.
