re: A Meteoric Event

"Is it usual for a meteor somewhere between the size of a chair and a desk to weight 1 to 10 tons???? That is one dense puppy!"

Well, a cubic meter of water is one tonne.
A chair is roughly about 1/2 a cubic meter and
a desk is probably more than 2 cubic meter.
A cubic meter of pure iron weighs 7.8 tonnes
So, it less dense than pure iron. Iron ores
vary: Iron Ore, Limonite: 3.796, Iron Ore,
Magnetite: 5.046, and Iron Ore, Hematite:
5.206 [and a Sapphire is 3.99:)]

Normal rock or normal surface rock is around 2 tonnes per cubic meter.
So, I guess it depends upon how big your desk is, you could have
one which is about 5 cubic meters, though probably more reasonable
desks would under 4 cubic meters.
