"Choice" means most alternatives are left behind. I believe it was Zorba the Greek who said that for every woman with whom he spent time there were 20 he couldn't.
And every attempt to resolve a problem will create more problems. Hopefully those are easier to handle. Usually no all of those problems can be predicted. That's because the solutions will interact with many factors unrelated to the issues of concern.
There are ways of looking at the world which precludes positive solutions. On these boards we see over and over the inherent and fatal problem for the Conservative black-and-white thinkers. That is that any solution must solve the entire problem and create no new problems.
Suggest a solution to universal health care. That solution would not have worked for their mother-in-law or a small child in rural Canada and therefore is not worthy of consideration. Suggest an alternative to war for dealing with complex international matters and one will be asked to explain how non-violence would have worked after Pearl Harbor. They box themselves in.
In a good v. evil world, compromise is a deal with the devil, and unworthy of the Great Defenders of the Faith. An ideology driven world-view forces polarization and as we've seen jingoism trumps reason. The rational person simply beats their head against the wall of righteousness.
There are occasions where force is the preferred method of dealing with a situation. No question about it. That is only after negotiation has failed. And in reality, if one has enough power to prevail the negotiations will work.

Every action is made at the expense of many, and every solution creates it's own problems.
