Is it terribly different in principle from using expendable rockets?

Ignoring the potential expense for the moment, suppose you need to
send a large amount of supplies to a Mars colony quickly. As long as
there are no humans aboard, a company might be willing to pay the
extra amount to get the supplies to the base ASAP and expend the
machine to get them there.

Or suppose the situation involves defense against either a natural
threatening object or some deliberate enemy force. To literally save
Earth and humanity, I can see using this propulsion method to deliver
whatever weapon is necessary to stop the threat, including using the
entire ship and drive itself as the deterent.

Developing this propulsion may also lead us to find something even
better in the process, too.
