A modern army is best defeated not on the front lines, where it bristles with weapons and elite troops. It's weak point is its unprotected supply lines, particularly those that are forced to cross hostile territory. Aghanistan has no access to the sea. Supplying it by air is extremely difficult, if not impossible.
