How about hydrothermal vents?
They provide heat and minerals and the animals on this planet can
live right next to them quite nicely while still being several miles
underwater in total darkness.
Granted none of the tubeworms or giant clams have done much in
terms of science and technology, but they are at least proof that life
can thrive way down in the deep dark ocean environment.
