Tangential
I just finished a book on the first 10 days of the German attack on Russia at the start of WWII. It was written from the Soviet point of view, describing the Soviet reaction.
Stalin completely misread that situation, too, and yet he was Da Man, and his mistakes were carried out. He was planning his own reasonably imminent attack on Germany, Soviet troops were moving into position to carry that out and in a terrible defensive alignment when the Germans hit.
Just shows that people with power become enchanted with their own omniscience.
