Hello,
I agree with you about seizing the day, and that anything could kill us at any time (be it your supposed 'foam,' an asteroid, radiation, supervolcano, whatever). I think we will be okay for a while though as the universe is currently "expanding" at quite a nice clip, and in terms of geologic time, things happen very slowly for us. Thankfully we are in-between extinction events.
We (humans) are still in our infancy regarding a complete understanding of space time itself (i.e. the sheer distances/time involved with space travel....even traveling at the speed of light). Plus all of the different types of dark energy, dark matter, radiation exposure, etc. That said, we should continue to move forward and constantly seek more information to find better answers.
The other point you make about "why" is more curious. You need to think more more philosophically. For example, while did Sir Edmund Hillary (who died earlier this year - RIP) desire to climb Mt. Everest? Numerous things out of his control could have (and almost did) kill him while he was climbing. Many would answer the queston, because Everest was simply there. Human beings love a challenge, and it tends to bring out the best in us. Also, many of us have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and progress. Life is worth loving, living, and preserving. Even if our attempts are futile, it is not so much where you end up my friend, but the journey itself. Why not try to expand the species beyond the planet Earth someday, (if we are so lucky as to be around) I say. The universe is a tough place, and each day we are breathing in it is a blessing.
We all realize that death for our bodies is also a part of life; so as you say, Carpe Diem!
Take care and enjoy the weekend! :-)
Vince
