What sort of algorithm for Pi is used to calculate those decimal places?

I've never understood how the relationship of a circle to it's diameter can be modelled accurately enough to calculate that ratio out to thousands upon thousands of decimal places. There must be some theoretical model which is trusted even though it doesn't involve measurement, one which doesn't have numbers but can be translated into numbers.

I just don't have the slightest idea as to how it could be done.
