Going to space is not easy !!!!
Spaceflight was compared with flight....But flying in the air was made easy by all kinds of destinations on earth.
Spaceflight is about going from 0 to 28,000 km/h and from seal level to vacuum: enormous stresses, pressure and temperature changes, enormous accelerations and none at all.
In the 70's we thought the spacecraft needed to be reusable, be huge, have wings, wheels, land on earth....And its successor is small, non-reusable, has no wings and wheels and might mainly land on water....
Airplanes are of course reu-sable, but spacecrafts can spend a long, very long time in space..once.
Going to space or rather to Mars, is like settling on the New World...but there must be a motivation and there's sufficiently enough social experiments going on on Earth that it won't push enough disatisfied-by-earth pilgrims to create a desire to go to Mars.
The problems are the enormous distances!! With our present day technology, it takes 3 times longer to reach Mars than it took the settlers to reach the new world and Mars is just not like Earth at all! And there is no other place around like ours .
It's just the way it is. We have to take care of the only place we've got.
