Calcium control and bone
Hi Marsby
Skeletons arose amongst critters like conodonts and lampreys, both saltwater forms. Deposition of the stuff inside the body might've originally been a homeostatic process to sequester the stuff when there was too much calcium. Eventually the trick proved useful as teeth and skin-covering/osteoderms. Don't remember it being a particularly freshwater induced necessity.
