I've received an email notification from PayPal that someone's made a donation of $52 to the HabitableZone Fund, and I thank that person (I know [or can reasonably map an email address into a handle] who "someone" is, but I haven't yet asked whether he/she wants public acknowledgment or would prefer anonymity). Which made me think of the message I posted here, and sure enough, it's led other generous persons to think of contributing to the HabitableZone, and mention of the Fund by the same name.
I want to be sure you understand that the Zone is only one of several Web sites that I run on my server, and that the expense range I outlined for colocating my server isn't all chargeable to the Zone, not by a long shot, just a rather small fraction of it in fact. And, in any case, as I described, I'm working on a plan to reduce the total cost. So I just want y'all to know that running the Zone isn't a financial burden by any means, and I wasn't soliciting contributions to its upkeep.
I thank the aforementioned someone and the other someones who posted their desire to contribute. That's very nice; this message should not be interpreted as in any way ingratitude, just truth-in-advertising. It's nice that people contribute to the HabitableZone Fund from time-to-time, and it's a tangible gesture that I do find personally gratifying. Thanks!
