Request for Proposals

I think there has already been lots of effort in the area of detection and characterization of NEOs. The fact that they can be tracked over multiple orbits has made it an easy first step. But it was only a baby step. What we haven't done is a similar effort for objects further out from the Sun: non-periodic comets. We only see these objects once because their orbital periods range from centuries to thousands of years. The fact that if one were heading our way we would only get one chance to "detect and deflect" makes it an important challenge.
I don't have time to submit a proposal myself. Someone else will have to do it.
