It doesn't take much imbalance on a big rotor...
...to rip the hell out of it. I did some helicopter work on the Roton project, and it can get scary.
All well-designed windmills have safety features that feather the blades or do something to "go with the flow" if winds get too strong. Obviously, this one, as you say, had a problem.
