Yeah, I was struck by the same thought at the same point, interpreting two circles as wheels (not so difficult) and attaching them to dots/virtual axles (much harder to infer). My best guess is that the video was edited, because too much happened throughout to be accounted for by the visible gestures. Somewhere there was a menu...
