Lettuce sandwiches
Talked to my mom recently about the depression. She said she remembered her and my aunt eating a lot of lettuce and mayonnaise sandwiches...and they were "delicious".
Her father owned the two story building where he also owned a cafe on the street level. They lived above in the apartment. Athough they never had to fear losing their home, things were tight, but as children they didn't share the concerns of their parents.
