Employers would rather deal with employees one on one, keeping them completely dependent upon the employer.
That's just one of the realities which doesn't fit the stereotype your are putting out there. Unions will work with employers to improve their business positions, their profits and their productivity.
Another is that lousy employers create unions. People don't want to belong to a union until they are forced to.
There are union excesses. They are nothing, absolutely nothing compared to employer excesses. However, a lifetime of Readers Digest and other propaganda is impossible to overcome. It will take the creation and expression of the plutocracy in the making before we will get around to creating a middle class wherein the person who devotes their time to creating wealth is respected and rewarded.
Right now it's too heavily weighted toward capital. Capital is necessary. So is labor.
