In Andy Chaikin's Man on the Moon

About the Apollo missions which was later turned into a miniseries on
HBO, he interviewed one astronaut who did the Apollo EVA and said
the utter blackness all around him made him grip the CSM's handrails
for dear life, as he did not want to fall away into the void.

The first EVAs without the perceived comfort of a large blue and white
planet below and the difficulty of seeing stars with the glaring Sun
must have been quite a shock. I am certain they were not prepared
for such a thing when planning that manuever. Astronauts were
supposed to be stoic and brave.

Ed White got in trouble after his historic EVA with Gemini 4 for publicly
enjoying it so much and telling Jim McDivitt he did not want to come
back into the spaceship. NASA apparently did not appreciate the PR
aspect of the event.
