Just some of the assumptions made in that premise:
--You can rebuild a twenty-first century economy by giving people shovels and telling them to build highway bridges and trails in the national parks.
--Government money comes from thin air, and is not pulled out of the private economy.
--We have never recovered from a serious recession without a trillion dollars in government spending.
--Washington political hacks and Nancy Pelosi will do a better job of "investing" in advanced technology than people who have actually worked in those industries much of their lives.
A recession is how an economy gets its feet back under it again while wealth is rearranged to bring productivity back on line. There is always creative destruction involved, along with people and companies who tighten their belts instead of spend. Artificially short circuiting this process, propping up failed entities and punishing those who did not fail, will make the next cycle worse.
This isn't about the economy and never has been. Look at that bill in detail, and what comes out of it over the next ten years. This is the power grab Democrats try for every time they get in the driver's seat. You want one difference between conservative government and liberal government, go back and read the Contract with America, and compare it to the ambitions for government power whenever Democrats are in charge.
The power grab flopped after Clinton was elected, and we had the 1994 elections. It's probably going to flop now, but I'm not taking any bets on 2010. Gingrich ain't there any more.
At some point, the economy is going to start to swing back up again. If there's a screaming hurry in Washington to get something...anything...passed, it's because they desperately need the law in place before the upswing happens.
