Lulin Report

Fort Lauderdale, 0300 UT, 2/28/09

Good ephemrides at:

http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/Ephemerides/Comets/2007N3.html

The comet was faint but easy in the 11x80 glasses, in the same field as Regulus.
The skies were clear, but light polluted (as always) and Lulin was just barely
visible in my 4" f/6 refractor at about 40X. Barely visible nucleus and coma out to
about 10'. No tails visible. No color.

Saturn, on the other hand, was spectacular, The rings are almost edge-on, and at least two satellites preceding. (lots of stars in the field) were visible at about 100X. The sky was light polluted, but seeing was sharp and steady and the planet took magnification easily, all the way to the scope's limit. It looked like a canteloupe with an arrow through it! And with two satellites lined up with the bar formed by the ring, it was like something out of A Space Odyssey.
