OK. We cut the taxes on the super-wealthy, those that do pay taxes, and gave them more disposable income. What did they do with it? Relatively little went into things which promote the economy. Rather, it went into hedge funds, derivatives, Credit Default Swaps and other financial instruments created to avoid regulations. Which led to the current collapse.
So if the taxes are raised on them, they'll still have enough to eat, take vacations, afford the 2 or 3 or 11 homes and will get along just fine. But they won't have the money to squander on your next hedge fund. They'll hardly miss it. But -
The government takes that money and spends it. On health care, provided onsite by American workers generally using American products. On bridges, light-rail, parks, school lunches, all manner of things which puts money into the hands of workers.
And those workers go out and buy all manner of manufactured goods, pay their mortgages, put kids through college. They do not buy derivatives, they tend to avoid hedge funds. They spend the money putting other Americans, and your odd Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and so on, to work. About all of it. Promoting the economy, promoting Americans, promoting America. Not on Credit Default Swaps.
After all, what's the problem now? People not spending enough money on goods and services. What did George W. Bush, the President of the United States, tell Americans they could do to help the country after 9-11? Go shopping, he said. Well, the super-wealthy did just that, but on 2nd and 3rd generation derivatives. We need to put money in the hands of patriotic Americans, those that will at least buy their Chinese bike from an American Wal-mart clerk.
Probably the best thing we can do is tax the super-wealthy, and moderately wealthy and the just plain wealthy right down to their last 2 or 3 mansions, 5 or 6 cars, a couple of boats. We may put some of their servants out of work, but they'll be able to go get good jobs. Those will be available.
Who ever believed that tax cuts for the wealthy created jobs? What a scam - could have come right out of Nigeria, along with the yellowcake for Saddams nukes.

Why taxing the hell out of the super-wealthy makes sense.
