As you so eloquently explained, as society has evolved to incorporate technological advances it has also deteriorated to the point that shocks to the economic system are not as well absorbed by individuals.
I believe when electricity became widely distributed it started to crumble. The family had been largely dependent upon natural light, was forced into somewhat the same schedule for everyone. And when the Sun went down there was nothing to do but socialize by fire or candle light.
Then along came transportation, allowing people to work farther and farther away Couple that with electric light and shift work, expanding hours of business and manufacturing, and the family started to disintegrate.
Along came a more sophisticated financial system, and it was easy to get credit. I can remember when it was a pain in the neck for Ma Bowser to purchase a new stove. A single mother wanting to borrow $117, payable in three equal monthly payments. Now it just goes on the card. Saving was stressed. And now spending is stressed. Don't save is the message. In order to maintain a high living standard (read "dysfunctional" living standard, because it doesn't supply the human needs) spend until it hurts.
Technology was supposed to make life easier, and instead we are to the place where one income cannot sustain most households. And when one of the incomes is degraded there are extreme stresses put upon all members. And Conservatives, not just Conservatives but certainly more of them than anyone else, are scared to death they will not be able to get something or afraid they will lose something. Why have anything if having it is going to cause so much anxiety?
And the support which was formerly available is gone.
The Amish aren't stupid.
I know there is anecdotal evidence which contradicts this. And what is important is the societal trend, not an Asian family living down the block with all manner of support.
"Progress" is not always forward.
