SHOULD decide what the public watches. They are called "editors" and that is their profession, to assemble a presentation of the day's events according to their best judgement. The public can go somewhere else for their news if they don't like how the editor does his job.
But editors have been replaced by program directors, who now only consider the commercial viability of the programming, i.e., how many advertisers they can snag. This is why all TV news looks and sounds the same, all AM radio stations sound the same, etc. Journalism has been replaced by infotainment.
A variety of competing news outlets of differing partisan views is nothing new, you are well aware of the broadsides and scandal sheets published since colonial times. The explosion of alternative news sources is a welcome development, but not without precedent; although again, the market dictates the profits lie with restricted groups with homogeneous views, not with a balanced presentation of the news. The sorry state of journalism today is not the result of bias in the press, it is the direct result of letting the marketing department run the editorial room.
