SÃ, se puede! Yes we can!
FMLN wins the Presidential election
This would never have happened had Obama not won the US election in November. It's no exageration to state that Obama's victory and the big change it's brought sent a green light to Salvadorans to drop the right-wing ARENA and switch to the FMLN, which within a European context would be referred to as a Social-Democrat party.
This is the same hard-headed El Salvador that followed George Bush charging into Iraq and stayed there longer than just about anyone else. But with 15% of the Salvadoran population living in the USA, and many here and there feeling a strong pro-American sentiment, the importance of maintaining good relations with the US can't be overstated, nor can the importance and influence of the dramatic change that occurred in the USA last fall.
The FMLN also made big changes which finally helped make this possible. They've finally put the nightmare of the war behind them, and grown and matured to embrace sensible mixed-economy, not radical marxist, solutions.
Obama's influence extends all the way...to...El Salvador
