They are all set to lay out a new city when they unanimously decide instead to disperse in groups all over the planet, destroy all their technology and send their starships into the sun. A clean start they say, without so much as a generator or toaster oven.

Yeah right, people would do that. They couldn't possibly think that they had learned enough from past mistakes to rebuild using their technology in a way that would avoid past mistakes. They would be certain that the best chance for the survival of humanity would be thatch huts and stone age tools. Yes that is going to work out nicely in a 150,000 years or so.
