Stunned and Shock and Awe

To quote:

"Stunned astronomers watched a car-sized asteroid explode into a brilliant meteor shower as it crashed into Earth's atmosphere, and then wandered into a Sudan desert to pick up the pieces, a study released Wednesday reported."

Were the astronomers really stunned? I love it when the media uses
these expressions to make things more dramatic.

And I doubt any sane Westerner would just wander into Sudan these
days. Something tells me those guys knew what they were doing and
where they were going.

It was quite neat to read how the computer simply stopped giving out
orbital data when it determined that Earth was going to get in the
planetoid's way. No flashing warning or danger lights, just a version of
This Does Not Compute.

Is this how it will be when a dinosaur level killer space rock comes our
way? The computer just stops giving out orbital data? And that's if
we are lucky to know it is coming at all.
