I have a few fluorescents in use, mainly in old lamp fixtures which were designed for 25 and 40 watt incandescents, but which can use a fluorescent and produce the same heat and a bit more light. That's it.
For the rest I have the GE Reveal series for better light. I've even learned that the 60 watt flood Reveal bulbs generate less heat than the 60 watt normal Reveal bulbs and use those in fixtures designed for flood lighting. I tried halogen fro desk lamps and mood lighting, and like the light it creates but the heat of those bulbs is incredible and, to me anyways, I didn't like the slight background smell of cooking light fixture.
My main complaint about GE's Reveal is that they only make Reveal up to 150 watts, and I like 200 watts in lamps used as reading fixtures. So I use the 50-200-250 incandescents in those. Also the bases of the made in China bulbs are messed up. They do not make a perfect match with what they are supposed to screw into - making them a slight fight to put in and remove.
Some fluorescents are noisy heated up and create a constant irritant, others heat up too much in certain fixtures and you also get the "cooking lamp" smell. And yes the warmth of the light makes a big difference in environment. Some bulbs are very yellow and one can't help but notice it when you have Reveal lighted fixtures in the same room.
And despite what everyone is supposed to do, we know the vast majority of folks will throw out their old fluorescent bulbs in the trash. Even low level mercury bulbs will translate to TONS and TONS of mercury pollution to the environment.
Fluorescents are an environmental disaster and each year are only poisoning our environment more. Soon, after fluorescents go worldwide in high quantities, it will be hard to find an area in the seas where fish are free of mercury poisoning. I would like to have a Mercury-free can of Chicken of the Sea tuna or a packet of Starkist in 2020 and if the greenies have their way with CFC legislation that will be impossible.
How many centuries will it take to undo this generations "Green" damage to our environment?
