The Midnighter

The medianoche, from the half moon shape of the soft bun, is intended as a light snack, usually to be eaten after an evening at the theater, opera, dance or concert. As I recall, it is usually ham and cheese.

The Cuban sandwich is made with Cuban bread (which the Cubans call French Bread because it is a baguette loaf), and is about a foot long with roast pork, ham, white cheese, mustard, mayo and lots of pickles. As far as I can tell, it was invented in Tampa, although they are now found worldwide. It can be served toasted on a sandwich press, or cold. A Cuban, served with a cold beer or a cup of hot milk flavored with espresso coffee, is a meal for a working man!
