I used to bend the corners (gasp!), I know. I DO NOT do that any more. I find it more meaningful if I make something of my own that pertains to the time I purchased the book/magazine. That has included fauna in the past and even newspaper clippings. :} Plain ribbon cuttings work well.
At least I don't bend the corners (as much) anymore, at least not on books. :}
