rI am as happy as anyone for a science fiction film that depicts realism, but...

Why does being in space have to be such a dark, depressing experience for those
who there in these kinds of films?

Last time I checked, most astronauts who volunteer to be in space are thrilled for
the opportunity, and short of outright death are aware and willing to put up with the
isolation and other harshnesses.

Or have I just been fed too much old-time NASA propaganda of smiling happy brave
no-problem space heroes and can't handle the truth?

After four decades, you think someone would have come up with something to truly
compete with 2001, but I am still waiting.
