re: Conspiracy Theories and Sanity

Conspiracy theories are attractive to the human mind, which is hardwired to construct patterns from otherwise seemingly unrelated objects or experiences.

It was once said that "nature abhors a vacuum." This was probably before it was discovered that all but a tiny fraction of nature is, in fact, vacuum.

Well, the human mind abhors chaos and randomness, also a large part of nature, and will go to enormous lengths to work up some pattern, real or not, that reduces this element in life.

It's much more comforting for some people to think some underlying force is running things. Even an evil force is better than the idea that history just muddles along like one of those vibrating table football games.

Conspiracy theories result from this human tendency, and come to that, no small number of religions and superstitions.
