What the environment extremists must recognize (but won't) is that we are out of the minor leagues.

Humanity is a major league team. What we do affects the entire Earth. It is simply not remotely possible for billions of humans to exist on this planet without having enormous environmental effects.

The idea should be to minimize these effects, but not to eliminate them altogether, since this is absolutely impossible.

For example, energy: There is no way that we are going to drive our cars around without affecting the environment. But improved mileage standards, pollution control, etc, etc, can greatly reduce the environmental effects.

We can not live in comfortable houses, but we can reduce heating and cooling loads by improving insulation and increasing HVAC efficiency.

Human environmental effects are here to stay.

Nothing will eliminate them entirely.

Nothing will reduce them to insignificance.

Nothing will make them benign.

Environmental extremists need to stop living in Never-Never-Land where it is possible to fly with pixie dust. In the real world, it takes energy, and lots of it.
