I didn't learn about this event until I read Arthur C. Clarke's 1976 science
fiction novel Imperial Earth. The folks of 2276 were debating whether
to pick up and replant the US flag out of respect or leave the Apollo 11
Stars and Stripes where it was lying in the lunar dust out of historical
accuracy.
Will LRO be able to image the Apollo landing sites? I hope they also go
for the Soviet Lunakhods and the Luna probes, especially the ones that
did not make it before Luna 9. And the US Surveyor 4 - I want to know
if it landed intact or crashed.
And note this quote from the Space.com article:
"It turns out that NASA had misplaced its computer tapes of the experimental data but O'Brien preserved his copies."
What else has NASA "lost" over the decades in terms of vital data?
This is why we have to reinvent the wheel to go back to the Moon.
