I thought our browsing histories were already for sale.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has received spam from
businesses who service industries they have recently googled.

Like unsolicited telephone advertising, it is not enough that you register or sign up or otherwise try to opt out of this communication. They will ignore that and call you at dinnertime anyway, and the authorities who are available to act on your appeals obviously have no intention or power to do so. There are those who think their desire to advertise to you Trumps your right to not have them constantly annoy you with an automated barrage of commercial propaganda.

I have no doubt that it is only a matter of time before it will become illegal to ignore spam online or on telephone communication on first amendment grounds. The victim will have to acknowledge he has listened to advertising by responding to it or be punished for violating the free speech rights of the advertiser.

This never happened in the past because the victim could simply hang up on a marketing call, and it cost the spammers money to pay someone to annoy people. But now that this activity can be automated and carried out at minimal expense, there is nothing to stop them.
