London was never really "bombed to smithereens" during WWII simply because the Luftwaffe didn't have heavy bombers.

Here's two questions about WWII:

Why did the British hold Rudolf Hess incommunicado for 30 years, when it is reported that he was on a peace mission to end the war?

And why did Hitler fail to annihilate the BEF at Dunkirk?
