It was a fun race to watch. Calvin Borel, the jockey, was in the rear at the beginning and brought the almost 3-year-old (May 10 is Mine's foal day) along the inside track and won it by 6 3/4 lengths. That was one speedy horse.
Now, for the good part. The horse had been purchased for $9,500 and this was Mine's trainer's 1st Derby. I believe it was also the 1st Derby for the owners. So a 50-1 longshot horse made a run for the roses and came up smelling like them (roses, that is)--plus the musty scent of a few greenbacks. That horse is now probably worth millions as far as breeding rights. Bet they're storing semen as we speak. Naw, they're drinking champagne and dining with millionaire owners/breeders right now.
I love the Derby. When none of the horses get hurt. Barbaro and Eight Belles broke my heart. They're making inroads in making racing safer.
Onto the Preakness in two weeks. I'd love it if Mine That Bird became a Triple Crown winner.
