Swine flu, bird flu and public warnings.

A lot is said about the hulabaloo made over the various types of flu and their threats to mankind. Most of them have been derisive, calling the concern overblown and unnecessary. And in truth it seems that way, as minimal damage to the Homo Sapiens species seems to have been done.

It seems to me, though, that the concern and warnings are warranted. It's a bit like being shot at, maybe. If there are bullets flying around and none of them hit me, there is no problem.

I could, if I wanted to, run around and criticize all of those who were yelling and screaming their warnings, suggest that there were no casualties and they could better use their time and energy doing something else. I could do that. However, I think one of those things is going to hit, and be devastating. Just because so far they've missed doesn't mean there isn't one out there with Mankind's name on it. Frankly, all those little bugs are doing with the aid of evolution is narrowing their aim. They have bracketed humans, and one of them will hit.

I appreciate the warnings and work which goes into each and every outbreak of those potential pandemics. Just as I appreciated someone yelling "INCOMING" even though the damned stuff missed.
