Tom will be able to choose the time of his reappearance. He can go back in time and use the red matter created blackhole to navigate precisely to the moment and location he wants to reappear, creating new, completely collapsible and temporary, black holes anywhere and everywhere throughout time and space. And he will not need to be a scientist, if he has some knowledge about mining - that's more than enough.

On his trip back he can prevent himself eating the brownies, catch Katie before she siphons off secret internet access, and return to the Zone, in time for his next post. And he'll be able to make these changes and return to the same altered universe each time by sheer will power and desire alone.

;-)
