When one is accountable to stockholders living far, far away from the fishing, it's rape and pillage. Same with miners, or anything. When one has to take care of the resource for his, his families and his progenies well-being they act differently. The philosophy that a quick profit is the best financial policy in the world is nuts.

Lack of accountability is what drove the American Revolution. The folks making the demands were backbench MPs in Britain who had no idea what was happening beyond the insistence the colonies must behave.

Same thing operated during the Reformation. A Pope in Italy thought he could dictate to all Roman Catholic clergy without understanding the issues.

And, to be perfectly honest, the same thing happens in the US today. Conservative politicians think they can tell third-world countries what to do and how to behave. A bit like the old-time British MPs. Two of them have bit us badly, and a third is on it's way.

When there is no accountability it all goes to hell.
