Query..How did GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc STAVE off Bankruptcy During the DEPRESSION?

I mean, Banks, the Feds, Towns, heck even Churches were broke yet to my knowledge they did'nt go crawling to the feds for $$$, just waited the whole mess out till the people started buying again, but the feds did create jobs like the CCC and WPA to stir spending and pride in the AMERICAN Workers,,,,, any ideas on this matter????
