He cleaned them up, educated them, and now nearly all of them in Havana work as spies for the gov't. Or at least those whose clients are the foreign tourists.
And hey, if you gringos are interested, they're pretty cheap and speak good English, too. At least that's what guys say - of course I can't speak from personal experience.
