Watched an interview with the Shah once. Bright guy.
In part of it he was talking about the Western use of oil, and said something to this effect:
"Why don't you guys shift out of oil for energy and start using other technologies? There is only so much oil, and it is the best way to make some materials and pharmaceuticals. It would make sense to save it for those purposes."
The guy sounded reasonable to me.
